The history of the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague can be traced back to 1776 when the Charles University of Prague gave lectures on agricultural sciences. Its actual history began in 1906 with the establishment of a Faculty of Agriculture at the Czech Polytechnic in Prague. Professor Julius Stoklasa, a renowned expert in soil chemistry, became the first president of the college. In 1952, the College of Agriculture was transformed into an Agricultural University with three colleges. On 1 January 1995, the school changed its name to Czech Agricultural University Prague (Czech zem d lska univerzita v Praze, acronym) and became a public university, governed and regulated by a Council of Rector, elected every four years by the Academic Senate of the University. It is overseen by a board of directors. Accreditation of all study programmes remains within the competence of the Czech Ministry of Education. In 2000, following the European Union’s Bologna Declaration, three years of bachelor’s degree, two years of master’s degree, and three to four years of doctoral degree were implemented. As early as 1999, Czech universities signed the Socrates Erasmus Charter and began sending exchange students to partner universities in the European Union. In 2007, the Academic Senate of the University changed the official English name of the Czech Agricultural University to the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech University of Life Sciences) with the acronym CZU, thus reflecting the full scope of its future educational and research objectives.

The Czech University of Life Sciences is one of the top European universities in the field of life sciences and a member of the European Union of Life Sciences (ELLS). According to the 2023QS World University Rankings, one of the dominant disciplines, agriculture and forestry, ranks 62nd in the world, and its ranking continues to rise.
