Berklee College of Music was founded in 1945 by Lawrence Berk and was originally named Schillinger House. In 1954, the college was renamed Berklee School of Music. In 1970, the College was renamed Berklee College of Music. In 2011, the college opened an international campus in Valencia, Spain, offering its first batch of postgraduate courses. In June 2016, the college merged with the Boston Conservatory of Music. The name of the merged school was Berklee College of Music, and the original Boston Conservatory of Music was renamed Berklee Boston Conservatory of Music. After the merger, the two schools share teaching resources, but still remain relatively independent in terms of student recruitment and subject management. In 2017, the college established a new campus in New York. In 2021, the college launched its first Bachelor of Arts degree – the Music Industry Leadership and Innovation major.
