Atlantic International University (AIU) is an unaccredited private for-profit distance learning university headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was founded in December 1998 as Atlantic University Corporation. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including doctoral degrees.

Although headquartered in the United States, AIU is not accredited by an accredited certification body in the United States. It is accredited by the UK’s International Schools, Colleges and Universities Accreditation Service (ASIC), but ASIC is not accredited by the US Secretary of Education.

Atlantic International University has previously been accredited by the unaccredited International Accreditation Commission. It is also listed as an unaccredited university in other countries, including Ghana, Nigeria (associated with Okija’s branch campus), and Oman. It has been described as a degree mill and its degrees are widely regarded as “fake”.

It is being sued by the Hawaii State Office of Consumer Protection for fraudulently claiming to be a certified institution. In a 2002 case, the state claimed that “AIU is not, and has never been, accredited by an accrediting body or association recognized by the United States Secretary of Education… AIU’s failure to properly and adequately disclose in its promotional materials, in particular the advertising of its agents, and the fact that it is not fully accredited by any of the nationally recognized accrediting bodies or associations listed by the U.S. Secretary of Education, violates Section 446E-2(a) of the Hawaii State Amendment Act.”
