The seminary was founded in 1956 as a sister institution to Covenant College, which had been established the previous year in Pasadena, California. Both are institutions of the Biblical Presbyterian Church (Columbus Bishops Conference). The founders of the institution believed that their denomination needed a strong seminary to counter the liberalizing influence of American evangelicals. The College and Seminary shared a president and campus in St. Louis until the college outgrew its space and moved to Luccourt Hill, Georgia, in 1964. They officially became two separate institutions in 1966.
Subsequent decades of denominational mergers made the school part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), then the Reformed Presbyterian Evangelical Conference (RPCES), and finally in 1982 through the so-called “Join and Receive” with RPCES – the Presbyterian Church USA (PCA), which elects and oversees the work of the seminary Board of Trustees.
Over the past 65 years, the seminary has grown in size and reputation, and now has a student body (on campus and online) from nearly every state in the United States and many other countries. More than 4,500 Covenant Seminary graduates now serve as pastors, church planters, missionaries, campus pastors, counselors, Bible interpreters, and educators in multiple denominations and in all 50 states and 100 countries, among many other ministries and nonvocational ministries.
