Simpson, is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in the American missionary movement. He resigned from a prominent New York pastorate to establish a denominational fellowship of men dedicated to “serving”. Simpson’s views were shared by a wide range of men and women, including mainline church leaders, laborers, and theological scholars. This growing coalition was held together by a desire to inspire churches to fulfill the Great Commission of world evangelization.

Making their vision a reality was an important step with the founding of a missionary training school (Missionary Training Center), the first Bible college in North America. This school was the forerunner of Nyack University. Thus, since 1882, Nyack, New York, has been committed to the concept of education in preparation for service. After purchasing 28 acres on a picturesque hillside, in 1897 the school moved to the village of South Nyack, New York. In 1956 the school was renamed Nyack Mission College and then in 1972 Nyack University to reflect the master plan of the college.

Alliance Theological Seminary, formerly the School of Missions, was established in 1960 to provide graduate programs at Nyack University. The Jaffray School of Missions emphasized the intersectional encounter between theology and the social sciences. In 1974, the redesign of the program was added to include the preparation of students for North America as well as an overseas department. The name of the school was later changed to Alliance School of Theology and Missions. In September 1979, Alliance School of Theology and Missions became Alliance Theological School (ATS). The addition of courses and additional capacity enhanced the college’s commitment to the mission of the church’s world evangelization. This commitment has permeated all aspects of the program.

Returning to its roots, Nyack established in 1995 as a satellite program in Lower Manhattan. In 1997, Union Theological Seminary courses were offered in the bar. The goal of the New York campus was to make research accessible to those working in the city and to provide a deeply urban theological education. Today Seminario, Nyack University, and the Graduate School continue to fulfill its founders’ vision of cooperative education by offering traditional and non-traditional undergraduate and graduate programs to racially diverse students.
