University College London was formally established on 11 February 1826 as the University of London, originally as a joint-stock company as it did not receive a Royal Charter. On 28 November 1836, the University received its Royal Charter and was renamed University College London. On the same day, a new University of London was established, with the power to award degrees in medicine, art and law to its students. In 1907, the school was incorporated into the University of London under the University College London (Transfer) Act 1905, renamed University College London, and subsequently separated from the University of London on 9 December 1977 and reorganized as University College London under the University College London Act 1979. In 2005, UCL was granted the power to award independent degrees on its own, no longer using the name University of London.

It consists of 11 schools, including the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Brain Sciences, and the School of Built Environment. The university offers 430 undergraduate programs and 720 graduate programs. There are 28 members of the Royal Society, 166 members of the British Academy of Medical Sciences, and academicians of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In addition, the school has 30 Nobel Prize winners and three Fields Medal winners among its alumni and faculty.
