Schenectady, founded and ruled by Dutch settlers at the time. It has about 4,000 residents and is the third largest city in the state, after New York and Albany. The Schenectady Academy, founded in 1785, was the first organized school in Schenectady. After its establishment, the school grew rapidly, with enrollment reaching about 100 students within a year. In 1792, the College began offering a full four-year college program, while offering basic practical courses for women students. Union College’s charter was granted by the State of New York on February 25, 1795, a date that is still celebrated by the school as “Founders’ Day.”
