The University of Louisville (UofL) is a public research university located in Louisville, Kentucky. The university was founded in 1798 as the first municipal public university in the United States and one of the first universities to be established west of the Allegheny Mountains in the United States.

The University of Louisville is authorized by the Kentucky General Assembly as an “Outstanding Urban Research University” and designated as a “research 1 (R1)” doctoral-granting university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education: a highly research-intensive university. The school’s students come from many places, including 118 counties in Kentucky, all 50 U.S. states and 116 different countries around the world. At the same time, the University of Louisville offers more than 200 degree programs, including more than 70 undergraduate majors, 78 master’s degree programs, 22 doctoral degree programs, and other related minors and online courses.

In the 1970s, it was originally a public institution funded by the City of Louisville and later joined the university system. The University of Louisville has three campuses: Belknap Campus, Health Sciences Campus, and Shelby Campus.

The Belknap campus covers an area of 287 acres, only 3 miles from downtown Lucky City, and 7 of the university’s 11 colleges are on this campus, which is the main campus of the University of Louisville. There is also the Health Sciences Campus, located on the Medical Campus east of downtown Louisville. This is the school’s original campus and has been in use since 1846, but the original teaching building no longer exists. The Shelby campus was originally home to Kentucky Southern College, which transferred its assets and liabilities to the University of Louisville after its collapse in 1969. The campus is now home to the Homeland Security Information Technology Resource Center, which conducts communications and information technology research for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
