The history of York St John University can be traced back to the establishment of a pastoral training school in 1841, Bishop of York College, later renamed St John’s College. In 1846 a church school for women was established in York and moved to Ripon in 1862. A century later, the two missionary schools merged in 1974 and were renamed St. John and Ripon College.
In 1990, the school merged with the University of Leeds to become an affiliated college of the University of Leeds, retaining the name St John’s and awarding Leeds University degrees to its students. Between 1999 and 2001, the school moved back to York and changed its name to York St John’s College. In February 2006, the school was granted full and independent degreegranting powers, and after a brief period using the name St John’s University College, the school officially adopted the name York St John University in July 2006 with the approval of the Privy Council.
